Kentucky is currently focusing on becoming a leader in the technology-centered economy, especially in the biotechnology industry. Mining and production, however, are still significant to the economy and to the workforce. The state has two large coalfields, and is also a producer of non-fuel minerals, such as crushed rock. With coal in such abundance, electricity is relatively cheap in the state and may be why so many manufacturing companies set up shop here!
Some of the biggest employers in Kentucky are also Fortune 500 companies, including GE, General Motors and Fort Motor, Citigroup, IBM and Hewlett-Packard, Kroger, State Farm, and Verizon Communications.
