Kansas is located almost directly in the middle of the country, and much of it is still covered in vast fields for agriculture or grasslands. Meatpacking, dairy, industrial computer machinery manufacturing, and fossil fuel processing are revenue-generators for the state. Interestingly, Kansas also has commercially valuable helium gas reserves and salt deposits.

Employment projections for the state for 2000-2010 predict that the management sector will grow up 12,640 jobs, and the business & financial occupations will add 5,080 jobs. General and operating management, in particular, is in the top ten fastest-growing occupations in Kansas, with a 12.9% increase expected over the decade.
