About half of Alabama's land area is devoted to agriculture, particularly to poultry and cotton. The forestry industry is also important; Alabama exports raw timber as well as wood and paper products. Manufacturing is the main economic contributor; hydroelectric power, oil and gas production, and automobile manufacturing are some of the big ones.
The state has several institutions of higher learning, many of which are acclaimed research facilities, including the University of Alabama, Auburn University, and Alabama A&M University. The state supports research at these facilities to further Alabama's economy in the rapidly-changing, technology-based world.
