"Twin Cities" is the term used when one speaks collectively about the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, which are located side-by-side on opposite banks of the Mississippi River in Minnesota. St. Paul is the capitol of Minnesota and has a population of roughly 287,000 people in an area of 56 square miles. Minneapolis is slightly larger, covering 58.72 square miles and having a population of over 382,000 individuals. Some areas located outside of these cities are sometimes included in the term Twin Cities due to urban sprawl and the blending of the communities into a larger metropolitan region. Many employment opportunities are available in this area. The top five employment sectors in the Twin Cities include: educational, health and social services (16.9%); professional, scientific, management, administrative and waste management services (17.9%); trade, transportation and utilities (11.0%); local government (10.0%); and financial activities (8.4%).
