Located at the foot of the Ozark Mountains near the Great Plains, Tulsa has a metropolitan population of approximately 936,864. Once known as an important hub for oil, the city still preserves its nickname as "Oil Capital of the World". Today, Tulsa has a diversified economy featuring aerospace, banking, high-technology, insurance, and telecommunications industries. Once referred to as "America's Most Beautiful City", the nickname is fitting for its location in the foothills of the Ozarks, its parks, museums, public artwork, and galleries. Being culturally diverse and rich in Native American history, Tulsa offers recreations and attractions for all to enjoy.
Employment and Internships
Tulsa is still considered to be an important energy and oil center as it still contains the most oil-based headquarters in the U.S. Business in Tulsa is booming, and the city was rated as one of the best 50 cities to do business in the U.S. by Forbes magazine. Students will find internships and employment opportunities with companies of all sizes in the region. Some employers include BOK Financial Corp., MCI, Syntroleum Corp., Whirlpool, and IBM.
According to the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission, the job outlook in Tulsa for business-related occupations looks excellent through 2012. General and operations managers will experience 12.72% additional opportunities; marketing managers will see 17.50% new jobs; human resource managers will have 16.17% new opportunities; financial managers will experience 13.78% new jobs; and business operations specialists will experience 23.43% additional job opportunities.
Education
Tulsa presents students with a variety of educational opportunities to choose from. One option is the University of Tulsa College of Business Administration http://www.cba.utulsa.edu/, which features an MBA Online – part time program that's named in the 25 best distance MBA programs by US News and World Report. Areas of concentration include Accounting, Banking, Business Economics, Business Law, Entrepreneurial Studies, Human Resource Mgmt., Information Systems, Merchandising/Retail, and Real Estate.
Oklahoma State University (OSU) – Tulsa offers degrees at undergraduate and graduate levels. Some areas of study are Finance, General Business, Pre-Law, International Business, Marketing, and Management. Additionally, the University of Phoenix – Tulsa Campus caters to working students by offering distance education and flexible class schedules. Degrees are available at the bachelors and masters level and include areas of study such as Criminal Justice Administration, Health Care Administration, and Human Resource Management.
Financial Aid
Students in Tulsa have plenty of options for financial aid. Scholarships, grants, and loans are all available from a variety of sources. OSU – Tulsa offers scholarships to their students, one of those being the Senator Charles R. Ford Scholarship. Any student admitted to an undergraduate degree program is considered. Awards are given based on financial need.
Additionally, private organizations offer scholarships. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) offers scholarships to minority students studying accounting. The maximum award is $6000; over the past 10 years the AICPA has awarded over $6 million in minority student scholarships.
Other forms of aid such as Pell Grants, Plus Loans, and Perkins Loans can be applied for by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by visiting the school financial aid office or by visiting FAFSA online.
Summary
Tulsa offers students a variety of educational resources in addition to a healthy economy. The employers in the region provide students with a future full of opportunity. These factors, along with the myriad of recreational activities offered by the city make Tulsa a good setting for pursuing an education in business.
