Named after the Great Salt Lake, Salt Lake City, Utah has a metropolitan population of roughly 1 million. Nicknamed the “Crossroads of the West” due to its centralized location in the western United States, Salt Lake City once had an economy dominated by steel, mining, and railroad industries. Today, regional economy is service-based having strong business, government, information technology, professional, trade, transportation, and utility sectors. As well, the city offers many recreations to residents. Being home to the renowned Mormon Tabernacle Choir, culture and the arts have a large presence in Salt Lake City. The area also offers plenty for outdoor-lovers featuring forests, national parks, lakes, and mountains that are famous for their ski slopes.
Employment and Internships
The Salt Lake City business industry is thriving. In addition, being one of just seven states that allow commercially owned industrial banks, the city's financial industry is booming. Students can find internship and employment opportunities with many employers in the region. Some of Salt Lake City's larger employers include Franklin-Covey, Overstock.com, Macy's, Delta Airlines, UBS Financial Services, GMAC Financial Services, and e-Bay.
Occupational outlooks for business-related professions in Salt Lake City area are excellent through 2012, according to the Utah Department of Workforce Services. At a glance, management occupations will have about 1,870 new opportunities while business and finance occupations will experience 1,080 additional jobs. Taking a closer look, general and operations management will experience about 390 new positions; financial management will see 140 new jobs; sales management will have 150 additional jobs; and business operations specialists will experience 170 new opportunities.
Education
Students in Salt Lake City have several options for pursuing an education in business. The University of Utah - David Eccles School of Business presents students undergraduate, masters, and PhD programs. Some specialties offered include Accounting, Banking, Business Administration, Business Law, Economics, Finance, Human Resource Management, and Merchandising/Retail.
The Westminster College – Gore School of Business features a unique accelerated MBA program and also focuses on giving students real-world experience through cooperative internships. Areas of study include Accounting, Finance, General Business, Human Resource Management, Management, and Marketing. In addition, the University of Phoenix – Utah Campus offers flexible class schedules to students and features studies in Accounting, Business Management, Criminal Justice Administration, E-Commerce, Health Care Administration, and International Business.
Financial Aid
Salt Lake City students have a number of financial aid options at their fingertips. Scholarships, a more traditional form of financial aid, are available at the institutional level as well as private sources. Westminster College considers all applicants for a number of scholarships. Their Freshman Scholarship may be renewed for as many as 8 semesters as long as the student maintains a 3.0 GPA and attends on a full-time basis. These awards range from $6,000 to $11,000 per year.
One of the largest scholarship programs available to students that are Utah residents is the Southwest Sterling Scholar. Sterling Scholar Awards are available to high school seniors and are given on a basis of their scholarship scores, service through leadership, and citizenship opportunities. Award amounts vary depending on the college of attendance and renewal policies.
Summary
Salt Lake City is situated in a beautiful, mountainous region that offers a great deal of outdoor activities in addition to other recreations. Outstanding educational institutions along with the prospering economy and its employment opportunities make Salt Lake City a desirable city to pursue a degree in business.
