Situated on the Kentucky-Indiana border at the famous Falls of the Ohio River, Louisville is the 16th largest city in nation. In its early days, the Louisville economy was primarily shipping and cargo industries. The economy has since diversified, though its role in the shipping industry continues as it has the world's largest air hub for United Parcel Service (UPS). Louisville offers many recreations for residents as well. It is famous for the Kentucky Derby in addition to other attractions such as theaters, museums, and the “4th Street Live” entertainment district. Louisville has a quickly growing population of approximately 255,000, which is expected to continue to grow for years to come.
Employment and Internships
Louisville has a growing economy with a strong business sectors. It is home to four Fortune 500 companies, Brown-Forman Corp., Humana Inc., Kindred Healthcare Inc., and Yum! Brands Inc. Some other large Louisville employers include Papa Johns Inc. and JP Morgan Chase, promising plenty of internship and employment opportunities for students and graduates alike.
According to Workforce Kentucky occupational projections, the outlook for business-related jobs looks good through 2010 for the region. Overall, Management Occupations will see 13.7% new job opportunities. Specifically, General and Operations Managers will see 11.8% new jobs; Operations Specialties Managers will experience 19.5% additional jobs; Financial Managers anticipate an astounding 24.3% growth; and Human Resource Managers will see 14.1% new positions.
Education
When it comes to choosing a school, business students in Louisville are not at a loss for choices. One option is the College of Business and public Administration at the University of Louisville, offering students both graduate and undergraduate degrees. Some areas of study offered are Accounting, Business Administration and Management, Economics, Finance, Management Science, and Marketing.
Another option is the Bellarmine College W. Fielding Rubel School of Business. Bellarmine offers undergraduate degrees as well as an MBA program in a variety of areas including Business Administration & Management, Information Systems, and Marketing. Additionally, the University of Phoenix – Louisville Campus offers students BA and MBA programs in Health Care Administration, Human Resource Management, Information Systems, and International Business.
Financial Aid
Business students have plenty of choices for financial aid in Louisville. A traditional option would be scholarships. The LCA-Gilmer Scholarship Program awards up to $1000 annually to full-time college student in the Louisville metropolitan area that are attending a 2 or 4-year school. Students can find a wealth of additional scholarships by visiting the Community Foundation of Louisville.
Grants and Loans are available as well from private, institutional, and government sources. The most popular, however, are Pell Grants, Stafford Loans, and Plus Loans that are applied for by filling out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). These can be obtained from a school counselor, financial aid office, or online.
Summary
Louisville is a city with a rich history that presents students with many recreational activities in addition to countless educational resources, a flourishing economy, and the employment opportunities to go along with it.
