Located on the southern California coast with a population of almost 4 million, Los Angeles is the 2nd largest city in the U.S. It once had an economy based largely on petroleum. In fact, during the 1920s it supplied approximately one quarter of the worlds oil. Today, Los Angeles has a growing, diversified economy; it is the largest manufacturing center in the U.S., with an economy driven by tourism, aerospace, petroleum, entertainment, agriculture, and international trade. They city offers more than a strong economy. Students can enjoy the outdoors at Athens Park and Venice beach in addition to other attractions including galleries, music, and professional sports teams.
Employment and Internships
Los Angeles also has a thriving business-oriented industry. Some business sectors include finance, law, telecommunications, healthcare, and transportation. Fortune 500 companies Northrop Grumman and Occidental Petroleum Corporation call LA home. Other businesses in the city include CB Richard Ellis, Fox Sports Net, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP, Guess?, Health Net Inc., and Sunkist. Students are certain to come across a myriad of internship and employment opportunities with these and other employers in LA.
The job outlook for business and finance appears excellent through 2012 in Los Angeles, according to the California Employment Development Department. Management Occupations as a whole will see 14.5% new job opportunities. General and Operations Managers will have 12.1% more jobs. Operations Specialties Managers will see 11.7% additional jobs. Financial and Human Resource Managers will both experience around 14% growth in new opportunities.
Education
Business Students have an array of educational options in Los Angeles. One option is the University of California – Los Angeles' Anderson School of Management, which offers BA and MBA degree programs to students in a variety of specialties including Accounting, Finance, Health Care Administration, Information Systems, Management Science, and Marketing.
Another option is the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, offering both graduate and undergraduate degree programs. Some areas of study include Business Administration & Management, Business Economics, Corporate and Business Communications, Entrepreneurial Studies, and Real Estate. Additionally, the Pepperdine University Graziadio School of Business and Management offers students degree programs in Management, Business Administration, and International Business.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is available to Los Angeles business students from several sources. Grants and loans are available from private sources as well as the government and schools themselves. A few examples are the Pell Grant, the Perkins Loan, the Federal Stafford, and the Federal Plus loans. These may be applied for by completing a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available at school financial aid offices or online.
Scholarships, a more traditional option, are available from private and institutional sources. A great example is The Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce (LAJCC), which offers two scholarship programs. The LAJCC Scholarship awards up to $2000 for graduating high school seniors in Orange, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. The other is the LAJCC Community/Junior College Scholarship, which awards up to $2,000 for residents of Los Angeles County that are attending community or junior college.
Summary
Los Angeles presents business students with a great occupational outlook, a booming economy, and countless recreational activities to enjoy. In addition, it has numerous educational resources and employment opportunities, making Los Angeles an opportune city to pursue a business education.
